Gunmen Throw Grenade At Jos Mosque

Tragedy was averted in Jos on Friday night when a grenade thrown into a mosque in Bukuru in Jos South Local Government on the outskirts of Jos, the state capital, could not explode.
SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that the 36mm hand grenade was fired into the opaque by the suspects who were on a motorbike with which they escaped.
However before making good their escaped, they had waited for few minutes to hear an explosion and were disappointed that the device did not explode.
It was learnt that they subsequently fired sporadically into the mosque but nobody was wounded.
The worshippers were said to have rushed out of the mosque when the object landed.
Media and Information Officer of the Special Task Force, Captain Salisu Mustapha, who confirmed the incident on Saturday in a statement, said that nobody was injured in the resultant melee.
He said, "This is to inform the general public and good people of Plateau State that there was an attempted explosion at a mosque located along Bukuru Expressway in Jos South Local Government Area on March 1, 2013 by 8:30pm.
"Miscreants threw a 36mm hand grenade in to a mosque but it failed to detonate, thereafter they fired shots in the air and escaped. No arrest was recorded."
Musptapha stressed that it took the intervention of the STF personnel who cordoned off the area to avert breakdown of law and order.
The statement also said, the STF in a separate operation in conjunction with the state-owned security outfit, 'Operation Rainbow,' discovered two unidentified corpses during a raid on criminal hideouts in Shendam and Bakin Ladi local government areas of the state.
Salisu said efforts were being intensified to unravel the mystery behind the unidentified bodies and those responsible for their death.
He urged people to be vigilant and report any suspicious objects, persons or activities in their area to security agencies.
